Leading Change in Education: Together we can do so much!
I have had the privilege of launching new schools with a learning communities site design. This design revolves around a group of educators collaborating in a pod with up to four enrolling classrooms and common spaces, facilitating co-planning, co-teaching and co-learning. One does not require a new school to adopt this approach. It was within this framework that I gained invaluable insights into effective change leadership in education.
While such schools are becoming more common, I was an early adopter, hosting learning tours for educators worldwide since 2012. It began when the first learning community wing was added to an existing school where I served as principal. I subsequently spearheaded the launch of a K - 5 and Gr 6 - 8 middle school, welcoming 900 students of families living within a university community. Nearly 6000 individuals requested tours within the six years that I served as principal. (A video showcasing the school is contained above.)
In 2020, I launched a similar Kindergarten to Grade 7 school in an inner-city community, which brought me immense joy. Observing the staff unite towards a common goal, driven by the principles of equity and quality, was truly transformative. It fostered a community of change makers dedicated to student success through the spirit of belonging, independence, mastery and generosity.
Crafting a comprehensive vision for a school and successfully implementing it can be daunting and exhilarating. Although I no longer hold the role of school principal, I support those who are navigating this rewarding journey.
